Buy An Open License
What is Microsoft Open Licensing?
This article will briefly paraphrase and clarify what
Microsoft Open Licensing is and why it may be beneficial for you.
An open license is not a site license; it is
merely a method of purchasing licenses. In other words, it will not change the
number of licenses that you will need to purchase. In general, that means one
license per computer the product will be installed on.
Open licensing is sometimes referred to as “volume
licensing” since it requires a purchase of five or more of any Microsoft
licenses to qualify. For a two-year period, future purchases do not have this
minimum number requirement, allowing you to buy just one or more additional
licenses at any time.
Lastly, to eliminate common misunderstandings,
licenses will never expire if purchased through open licensing. Many
people ask this due to the fact that enrollment in open licensing is for a two
year period. This two-year period marks the duration of your software
assurance, which does expire if you buy it, but does not affect the
licenses purchased in any other manner.
Should I purchase Software Assurance (SA)?
Software assurance
is a method of keeping your licenses current and up-to-date, and may be perfect
for your organization. Here is a great article about SA if you would like to

What are the Benefits of Open Licensing?
Open licensing
will provide up to a 20% discount* off retail prices on licenses you purchase.
This percentage will vary depending on which products you buy and whether you
are a home user, business, or educational institution.
Besides lower
prices, open licensing will prevent loss, theft, or destruction of your
licenses, since they will be kept on a secure website (https://eopen.microsoft.com).
When you enroll in open licensing you will be given an authorization number.
This will allow you to access the "eopen" website and view your licenses and
product keys at any time.
Further benefits
of open licensing include ease of installation and storage. You need only order
one media kit (CD) for any quantity of each product you purchase. This open
license media cd does not require activation on each computer that you install
it on.
