There are 2 basic
licensing models available to those who purchase SQL Server 2005:
1- Server and CAL
licensing
2- Processor Licensing
Each license method
is available for both the Standard and Enterprise editions of SQL.
Server and CAL
Licensing
This method is
typically most cost effective with smaller networks and databases not
accessible to Internet users. You simply purchase a server license for
the version of SQL you need (standard, enterprise, etc.) and a client
access license (CAL) for each user or device that connects. CALs can be
purchased as ‘per user’ or ‘per device’. User CALs are attached to
specific user names, while each device CAL attaches itself to a specific
machine (desktop, laptop, PDA, etc.) that accesses the server. SQL CALs
are not based on concurrent usage. Also, there is no differentiation
between CALs for each edition of SQL.
Per Processor
Licensing
When your SQL Server
is going to have a large amount of users, or when it will be available
to the general public over the Internet, you will likely want to
consider the ‘Per Processor’ licensing method. With this license
scheme, Microsoft does not require you to buy a server license or CALs.
Simply purchase a Processor license for each CPU on your server and you
are allowed unlimited users.
